Pet Odor Control & Removal

Carpet odor removal can be a hit or miss project. Sometimes the only option for a successful removal is to repeat the procedure until better results are discovered. Discovering the cause of the odor can help prevent ineffective treatments. If your carpet odor is caused by pets and the pet byproducts haven't saturated the carpet padding, a simple steam cleaning and pet deodorizer will often do the trick. If your carpet odor is caused by bacteria, however, steam cleaning may actually make the odor worse if you end up spreading the bacteria throughout the carpet without killing it. If the odor has penetrated the carpet padding, you may have considerable trouble with odor removal.

Regarding Urine Stain Removal

A stains left behind from urine is an organic dye; the tannins in urine vary from animal to animal. Once the stain bonds to the surface of the fibers its bond can only be broken through oxidation which is the process of adding oxygen to the stain molecules. In most cases pre as well as post treatment are necessary. Sometimes success is achieved on the first attempt however complete stain removal is not guaranteed.

Looking at the Options:

Before attempting any cleaning process it is imperative that further investigation is performed to find the source of the odor. (i.e. - looking underneath carpeting to investigate levels of saturation.) The inspection is intended to inform the owner / tenant of their options regarding odor removal.

  • For "Surface Deposits" of urine that has not saturated the carpet backing, carpet pad or subfloor can typically  be handled with a topical treatment with UPT (Urine pre treatment) which breaks the alkaline bonds of the urine and neutralizes the PH then an enzyme treatment is applied to metabolize the rest of the urine.

  • For "Carpet Backing Saturation" of urine the next level in odor removal is required. Thru the process of "Sub-surface Extraction". The process includes the application of a high temperature oxidizer to saturate the affected areas. Dwell time of up to 30 minutes is required for this process to complete its chemistry. With heavily saturated padding and or tack strips we will suggest replacing the effected materials.  Also if the subfloor has been affected then it too needs to be treated. The product we use is called "Odor barrier" and is a long term enzyme that will continue to break down urine deep in the wood surface.

Regarding Hard Surfaces :

Keep in mind, too, that hard surface flooring can also be vulnerable to odors and should be treated just as delicately and meticulously as the carpet. Hot water extraction is often still the way to go but the cleaning product must have a compatible pH level or you can run into the risk of ruining your floor. Multiple applications of deodorizer and cleaning may be needed for difficult odors. Sub floor cleaning and treatment is the only sure fire way to prevent the odor from ever returning. The costs will vary case to case. Let me assess the situation for you to prevent any further issues.
